History
History will show that the Irish Missionary
Resource Service (IMRS) was incorporated under
the companies act and accorded charitable status
in January 2004. The foundation of the IMRS is
rooted in the recommendations of the Ireland Aid
Review Committee (2002) which acknowledged that
“the historical roots of the Ireland Aid
programme lie in the remarkable work which has
been carried out over many years by Irish
missionaries and recommended that “..a special
effort should be made to support the development
work of Irish missionaries who have been active
in the poorest countries of the world for the
best part of a century and who are making an
invaluable contribution to the alleviation of
poverty and suffering”.
Following considerable discussion between the
Irish Missionary Union (IMU) and Development
Cooperation Ireland (now Irish Aid), the IMRS was conceived as
the most appropriate mechanism through which the
Government’s funding support could be
coordinated for the missionaries and, following
an internal change management process within the IMU, the IMRS was established.
